CleanShot X OCR alternatives for copying text

Mostly use CleanShot X to copy text? Lighter and cheaper options as of October 2026: free macOS tools, text-only capture apps and Shottr, plus when to keep it.

Title card: CleanShot X OCR alternatives for copying text

CleanShot X is a full screenshot and recording suite, and text recognition is one tool among many. If that one tool is most of what you open it for, a smaller app or a free macOS feature can do the same job for less. If you lean on its other tools too, it’s probably still the right purchase.

We make Unpixel, one of the text-only apps below. Everything about other apps comes from their makers’ sites as of October 2026, linked under Sources.

Quick answer

If text recognition is the main thing you use CleanShot X for, you can pay less or nothing. Live Text and a Shortcuts action are free, and TRex is free and open source. Text Lens, Letra and Unpixel are small one-time purchases built only for text, and Shottr is a cheaper screenshot app with OCR. Keep CleanShot X if you also annotate, record or share links.

If you mainly use the OCR

CleanShot’s text recognition works the way you’d expect: select an area that contains text and it’s copied to your clipboard. Its features page says recognition happens completely on the device, covers more than 30 languages and reads QR codes.

What you pay for is the whole suite. As of October 2026, the Basic license is $35 one-time and includes a year of updates, with optional renewals at $19 a year. The Pro plan is $10 per user per month, billed annually, and adds unlimited cloud storage and team features. CleanShot X is also part of a Setapp subscription. It needs macOS 13 or later.

A quick way to decide: think about the last month and tick off what you used.

  • Annotation, arrows and blur
  • Scrolling capture
  • Screen recording or GIFs
  • Cloud links for sharing
  • Pinned, floating screenshots
  • Text recognition

If only the last box is ticked, read on. If three or more are ticked, skip to the last section.

Built-in options

macOS can already copy text from a screenshot, just with more steps. Press ⌃⇧⌘4 to put an area of the screen on the clipboard, open Preview, choose File → New from Clipboard, and drag across the words with Live Text. Our guide to copying text from a screenshot covers more routes.

For a single key, build a Shortcuts shortcut from Take Screenshot, Extract Text from Image and Copy to Clipboard. It’s free and private, but it reads words only, without QR codes or table layout. The Shortcuts walkthrough has the exact settings.

Text-only capture apps

These apps do one thing: a shortcut, a drag, and text on your clipboard. Each adds something different on top. Details as of October 2026:

  • TRex: free and open source, with a paid version on the Mac App Store. It adds a custom words list, automation actions and a command-line tool, and runs on macOS 11 or later.
  • Text Lens: $6 on the Mac App Store, for macOS 26. It has no network access at all, keeps tables as tab-separated text, and can show what it read in a window where you can edit it.
  • TextSniper: its website lists $7.99 for one Mac as of October 2026. It adds text-to-speech and reads QR codes and barcodes.
  • Letra: as of October 2026, $5.99 for one Mac, one-time, for macOS 14 or later. It adds a searchable capture history and a URL scheme for launchers.
  • LudyLens: free for three captures a day, or $8.90 one-time on its site as of October 2026, for macOS 15 or later on Intel or Apple silicon. Its pin widget keeps a capture floating on top, a little like CleanShot’s pinned screenshots.
  • Unpixel (ours): $5.99 for one Mac, one-time, with a 14-day money-back guarantee and no trial.

Unpixel reads any area you drag over after ⇧⌘2, on your Mac, with Apple’s Vision framework. Where it differs from CleanShot’s OCR is what happens to structure: a captured table pastes into Numbers, Excel or Google Sheets as real cells, and holding ⌥ as you let go copies a translation instead. It keeps a searchable history and reads image files and PDFs of up to 50 pages. It doesn’t take screenshots you can annotate, and it needs macOS 26 on an Apple silicon Mac.

Other screenshot suites

If you want annotated screenshots as well as text, but for less, look at Shottr. As of October 2026 it’s free to use with a pay-what-you-want license, and runs on macOS 10.15 or later. Its OCR hotkey copies the text in an area, it reads QR codes, and it has scrolling capture. The app asks you to buy it from time to time, which is the trade-off for the price.

The built-in Screenshot app (⇧⌘5) handles capture, a timer and recording, and Markup covers simple annotation. It has no text recognition of its own, so pair it with Live Text or one of the apps above. Our comparison of CleanShot X and the macOS screenshot tools goes through what you’d give up.

When CleanShot X is still the best value

Keep it, or buy it, if any of these apply:

  • You use several of its tools every week. One app with one set of shortcuts beats three small apps.
  • You share screenshots as links. Cloud sharing and team management are what Pro is for.
  • You already own a Basic license. It keeps working after the update year ends, so switching only makes sense if a feature is missing.
  • You already pay for Setapp. It’s included there.
  • Your Mac runs macOS 13, 14 or 15. Current versions of Text Lens and Unpixel need macOS 26; CleanShot X doesn’t.

If you keep CleanShot X and add a text app, give text capture its own shortcut, and turn off CleanShot’s text shortcut so the two don’t compete.

Frequently asked questions

Does CleanShot X stop working when its year of updates ends?

No. As of October 2026, CleanShot’s pricing page describes the Basic license as pay once, use forever, with one year of updates. After that you keep the version you have, or renew updates.

Is CleanShot X’s text recognition done on the Mac?

Yes, according to CleanShot’s features page, which says text recognition is performed completely on-device. Most of the alternatives here say the same.

Can I run CleanShot X and a text capture app side by side?

Yes. Give each its own shortcut and turn off the capture-text shortcut in whichever app you don’t want to answer, so one key doesn’t trigger two apps.
